Our Story

The Santa Clara Women’s League was founded in 1983 when funding for the Senior Center Health & Wellness Program was in jeopardy.  A group of Santa Clara women started raising funds for the Program by putting on an old-fashioned melodrama, SHOWTIME.  Each year, that tradition continues and the Santa Clara Women’s League is the primary sponsor.  We gather donations, produce and sell tickets, and volunteer at the performances.  All of this takes many dedicated and hardworking women who want to serve their community.

Another community project for SCWL is providing a catered Holiday Meal for 100+ seniors who participate in the daily meal served at the Santa Clara Senior Center. Our members decorate the tables, converse with the attendees and bring in a musical group to entertain the diners.

The proceeds from all of our activities help us accomplish our goal of supporting Santa Clara seniors through the Health &Wellness Program at the SC Senior Center.

OUR ORGANIZATION

We are a nonprofit organization registered with the State of California and donations are tax-deductible.

We are currently working to increase our membership.  Please consider joining SCWL!

We have eight general meetings a year at the SC Senior Center, 1303 Fremont St. on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. The work of SCWL is performed by our Officers and many member committees: Showtime, audit, finance, membership, phone (communications) and others. In September, we have a membership drive to encourage women to join our cause, but members are accepted throughout the year. Many Showtime committees work for several months to prepare for our large fundraiser in March. We also have social events in December and an installation dinner in June to welcome our new officers. Every month, members meet at a local restaurant for breakfast and conversation with each other.

Santa Clara Senior Center Programs

Santa Clara Women’s League’s main goal is to support Santa Clara Senior Center Programs such as the Health & Wellness program and Senior Nutrition Program. To learn about the Health & Wellness Program click here. The Senior Nutrition program provides a hot meal and socialization with other older adults five days a week. Any older adult is eligible to participate in the program. 100% of our profits from Showtime are donated to the Santa Clara Senior Center and over the years we have donated over a quarter of a million dollars to support the older adults of our community.
