The Santa Clara Women’s League was founded in 1983 when funding for the Senior Center Health & Wellness Program was in jeopardy. A group of Santa Clara women started raising funds for the Program by putting on an old-fashioned melodrama, SHOWTIME. In March of each year, that tradition continues and the Santa Clara Women’s League is the primary sponsor. We gather donations, produce and sell tickets, and volunteer at the three performances. All of this takes many dedicated and hardworking women who want to serve their community.
Another community project for the SCWL is our Senior Meal Delivery every December. The Senior Center selects seniors from their client list to receive a delicious Holiday meal which our members deliver to their residence. Along with the meal, the seniors receive a poinsettia plant, See’s candy and a gift bag filled with small items. It is a heartwarming experience to give someone a bit of joy for the holidays.
The proceeds from all of our activities help us accomplish our goal of supporting Santa Clara seniors through the Health &Wellness Program at the SC Senior Center.
We are a nonprofit organization registered with the State of California and donations are tax deductible.
We are currently 72 members strong and are working to increase our membership. Please consider joining SCWL!
We have eight general meetings a year at the SC Senior Center, 1303 Fremont St. on the second Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. The work of SCWL is performed by our Officers and many member committees: Showtime, audit, finance, membership, phone (communications) and others. In September, we have a membership drive to encourage women to join our cause, but members are accepted throughout the year. Many Showtime committees work for several months to prepare for our large fundraiser in March. We also have social events in December and an installation dinner in June to welcome our new officers.
Santa Clara Women’s League’s main goal is to support the Santa Clara Senior Center Health & Wellness Program by donating $15,000 this year. See this page for a description of the Health & Wellness Program.
